I recently took my daughter to Seabutter in Westlake Village, and we had a great experience. She ordered the miso soup, Sunset Roll, and the yellowtail with scallions hand roll, and everything was fresh and high quality. It’s a great little sushi spot with an excellent sushi bar. Just be aware that seating inside is limited, and some of the tables are pretty small, so it fills up quickly during peak hours. It’s definitely on the pricey side, but that’s pretty common for good sushi these days. If you’re looking for quality sushi, I’d definitely recommend Seabutter. If you’re looking for a restaurant with a bigger atmosphere or a place to linger for the evening, you may want to choose somewhere else.

It’s very small inside, seating is limited and close. I recommend reservations to ward off “wait time”. People were dining just outside the doors at nearby tables. I saw no servers outside - likely ordered to go then ate outside? Worth an ask. Perk- Eating by the nearby fountain looked relaxing and offered “people watching” if you enjoy that. If you order from “Hot Plates” the Sizzling Black Cod doesn’t come w’ rice/ order a side of rice for $2. My entree was very good! Waitress was excellent! My sons both ordered multiple rolls and she cleared their plates and brought their next entrees quickly. They each had the waygu with authentic wasabi dabs on top, they said it was very good. Waygu is not something they’ve seen offered at other sushi restaurants. Bon appetite!

TL;DR: great service, okay sushi, but we both got acute food poisoning. Avoid. My fiancée and I love sushi (we go to Sugarfish probably 2-3 times a month). We live much closer to Seabutter, though, and we hoped it would serve as a viable substitute. It also has a much wider variety of options (including cooked food). We waited about an hour for a seat at the bar. The fish was quite good, but the rice in the nigiri was not sushi rice, and it was not served warm. It was wet and fell apart too easily. The sashimi was very nice, and the crispy rice was excellent. The dragon roll was good, too. After our meal, we decided that if we came back, we would stick to sashimi, rolls, and crispy rice—no nigiri. The bill came out a bit cheaper than Sugarfish, too. We drove about 8 minutes back home, and within about an hour of our last bite, we both succumbed to acute food poisoning. We didn’t eat the same things throughout the day—the only meal we had in common was dinner, and it struck us at exactly the same time and lasted the same duration. We have sushi all the time, so there’s no special sensitivities on our part. Here’s what I can infer. The symptoms came on too fast to implicate the “typical” pathogens for bad raw fish (which can take 12-48 hours). So the fish quality itself is likely not to blame. By morning, we both now feel fine. That’s the good news. The bad news is that this likely implicates “preformed toxins/irritants,” pointing to unsafe or unclean food handling practices. The staff were very nice, the food tasted pretty good, but food poisoning is totally unacceptable in a restaurant of this caliber. We will call the restaurant today to let them know—this needs to be fixed. Hopefully no one else got sick. We are fine, now—thankfully.

Go here without the expectation you're to get their best every time. There isn't very good quality control here. I've ordered avocado roll with jalapeno multiple times and 1/2 are done well and then the other half are done like this. How hard is it to stay consistent with your food? Jalapenos go in the rolls just like cucumber or anything else, not just dumped on top.

**** i’d like to add an updated review. As I felt sea butter was the premium sushi restaurant in the Area. I will say that just simply ordering a couple of rolls and a few other small things it’s still meets or exceeds typical sushi places, however on today’s order the sashimi salad while reasonably priced almost all of the fish still had portions of the skin on. I’d happily pay much more for an actual sashimi salad. The roles were perfect. And I’d kill for 1 million gore gallons of the mushroom miso soup. I appreciate the response that I hadn’t seen until today. My apologies. I still Continue to believe that reasonably priced roles while charging exponentially more for high-quality sashimi is the way to go, but I buy no means run any restaurants ever nor will I thank you for existing I will still order. These are just my thoughts. The reason for the low review is we LOVED seabutter. They were closed for renovations. Then they opened and the portions and cost are insane. They cut their portions in half. I was very disappointed
